TIQQE leadership program

Last september we started the TIQQE Leadership program. In this post I am going to tell you about my personal experience and reflections I did about it.

Change is constantly in our life. You deal with changes all the time: in your job, in your everyday life and in your relationships, with others and with yourself.
Everything changes, everything evolves and you can’t stop that.
The only way to not be left behind, stuck in your safe bubble you have hardly built, is to embrace changes, to be a part of them.

Embracing changes forces you to continuously question yourself and actively decide to make actions that could lead to failure, loss or even force you to start from scratch, again. And sure, that can be scary but it is the only way to grow and to improve yourself.
Embracing and being part of change is fundamental in a developers life.
In fact, IT leads the evolution and in the last two decades we have witnessed a real and true revolution in the sector.
Software has pervaded our lives and reshaped them.

The way of developing software evolved, so did the role of the developer.
Working in a team, having good communication with colleagues and customers, feeling empathy, being flexible and able to adapt, listening and supporting, being nice, depersonalizing, taking responsibilities and having leadership skills, are all qualities that a developer should have to be successful.

Mastering one programming language to develop a certain kind of product on a specific infrastructure is not enough and valuable anymore.
What is important instead, is the attitude to never stop learning, to start from scratch again with a new technology.
Being ready and prepared to challenge yourself is precious.
Despite the name, soft skills are not easy to master at all, and in order to achieve some of them you really need to be prepared to work on yourself.
Not all the IT companies have realized that yet and above all not all of them dare to change.

Receiving the invitation to join the TIQQE leadership program was for me, like receiving a message saying “we believe in you, we are investing in you”.
That was really nice. I got really thrilled about the idea that I was receiving a great opportunity to work on and improve my soft skills.
The program had the aim of working and practicing with some really simple but powerful tools and making their use a habit, something that is a natural part of our way to work and think.
The tools give us the ability to see different perspectives and help to work on ourselves not only personally but also in a team context and in a company context.

The best part of the experience was for me, the possibility of sitting together in the same room and speaking about ourselves. It gave us the possibility of getting to know each other, and learning from each other. I thought a lot about what my colleagues have told during the sessions we had and I tried to bring some of their perspective in my life.

I think it was an amazing experience that gave me a lot and that showed me how much I can grow and improve both personally and professionally, for myself and for the people around me.

One-year anniversary at TIQQE:

Late last week it hit me that I’ve been part of TIQQE for over a year.
In this blog I would like to share some of my experiences from the previous year.

I started in November 2019, I was excited, filled with energy, many ideas of what we could do and to be honest I was nervous and at times I still am.

It started great, it was a booming market, we have great company with fantastic employees and customers, and I spent most of my days spending time with them.

We have always said we want to build something different – We want TIQQE to be something else.

We kicked off 2020 by setting the strategy ahead and didn’t want this to be set within a small group of people, so we opened this up to the entire company and workshopped together from our set vision and mission. Together we defined what was important for everyone and then together set a plan and started to execute. The result was outstanding, I was blown away by the amount of great ideas and the involvement by everyone and what pleased me the most was that we did this together.

Then just around the corner the pandemic hit, we saw a rapid change in the market and understood that we needed to act quickly. We needed to take control of what we could internally and then focus on sales externally and adapt to the market. We set a plan in place and started to execute, somethings worked and of course many didn’t.

We had one rule during the pandemic, we don’t let anyone go and stick together. Whatever it takes and make sure to always find a way, to ensure our peoples safety.

I’ve personally made many mistakes in the past year, everything from saying the wrong thing, making wrong decisions and feeling of course I could have handled certain situations better. At the same time, it’s been very fun, at times it’s been challenging, very developing and I’m extremely thankful to have the possibility to work with people who are kind, understanding, helpful and out-standing within what they do.

My key take aways from my first year are:

  • You don’t need to have all the answers
  • The more questions you ask the more you learn
  • Reflect, reflect, reflect
  • Don’t be afraid to say I don’t know
  • Don’t see employees and customers – See individuals
  • Most importantly always be nice

Have you found Your place?

I got the question, in connection with it becoming official that I would become vice president where I am now. Are you going to take your place now? What are you thinking? Will you step forward now and take your place?

That comment stuck with me. Step forward and take my place. I’m good. I’m tremendously good at my job. I am competitive, determined and over the years I have become better at running businesses forward than many men my age and in my industry do. Because I have to. I have worked all my working life in IT, which when I started consisted of less than 10% women and now stands at around 30%. I know budget, forecast on the penny when. I can see the goal that exists in ten to twenty years, make strategies for how we get there, I understand more technology than I need. I can work methodically and patiently, but above all I can see overall pictures. I have been involved in running projects worth many millions, I have worked with customers who turn over billions. I have been in smelters, traveled in mines that have more than 40 km of paved road underground, been with customers outside Sweden and gained insight into what strip mining is. My choice of profession has given me the privilege of working in Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Italy, Greece and the USA.

I have noticed a difference in how I look at a managers and leaders role compared to many. And that is that I am completely convinced that we must change how we look at successful leaders and how we create success.
How do you measure success? How do you know you have succeeded? When are YOU the BEST leader?
Is it when I get the Tag Heuer watch because I was elected Leader of the Year? When I get to talk to 700 people about my view on leadership? Or is it when I get to have my father, who in many ways laid the foundation for how I look at leadership, in the audience at a leadership event when I give a lecture on why I lead as I do?

Of course that means something to me and that I’m proud!
….but…
What really matters to me is when people I have around me and that I am responsible for somewhat feel safe and step forward. Take a step up and take their place. Dare to write the certificate with the risk of “failing”, challenge themselves to lead interviews with potential colleagues even though you do not yet see yourself as the fantastic role model you are, dare to expose yourself and your feelings for me even though we are at work, write fantastic blogs even though it doesn’t feel comfortable. When people know that every tag-line or word of value is for real and not just talk. I look forward to when we as “leaders” understand, right in the stomach and heart, that the only thing we have as our main task is to ensure that everyone around us who is on a journey to the next step, is given the opportunity to take that step. It’s not about strategies or hidden agendas. When we release, enable and see people’s potential, there is no stopping what will be achieved.

Having said that. I have taken my place 😊 The energy I get and my feeling of success is not in my title or position. It lies in all the people around me who take their place more and more every day. So today I want to thank ❤️
I want to thank those who let me find out what my leadership philosophy is and let me practice, fail and succeed over the years and I want to thank all the amazing people who work with me today. I’ll quote Buzz Lightyear.
❤️✨ To infinity and beyond ✨❤️

Torbjörn Stavenek just joined TIQQE

We’re proud to welcome Torbjörn Stavenek to our team at TIQQE. Torbjörn is an AI and Machine Learning expert and will lead our investment in the AI and Machine Learning domain due to an increasing demand from our customers.

Who is Torbjörn?

My name is Torbjörn and I have been working with IT for more than 20 years. I am originally from the south of Sweden, studied in Linköping and worked for many years in Stockholm. However, 5 years ago me and my family bought a farm in Vintrosa just outside Örebro and moved there.
I have a wife and 3 kids, a dog, a cat, some hens, and various other small animals.

I am in general an optimistic and curious person. My interests include cooking, wine, creating and listening to music, carpentry, forestry, investing, exploring business ideas, gaming, etc.

What did you know about TIQQE before you started?

Since I had been working with many of the people at Tiqqe before, I had a pretty good idea about the company. I knew about the AWS and serverless focus, and I also knew about the employee and customer focus.

Why did you want to join TIQQE?

As I mentioned I know many of the people at Tiqqe already and I want to work with nice people  – so that was easy! I have been working with cloud and serverless for some years now which is also a great fit with Tiqqe.
But what really sold me was their new AI-initiative which I will be an integral part of.

What was your first impression of TIQQE the first week?

Much as expected: nice people, drive, engagement, and lots of discussions about customers and projects.

What is your role at TIQQE?

I will lead the investment into the AI and Machine Learning domain together with Andreas Vallberg and Anna Klang. Several of our existing customers have come quite far in their digitalization journey. They are looking to explore the opportunities within their data which we will be able to help them with. We’re already involved in several AI and Machine Learning projects, some really ground breaking capabilities within prediction.

How has your fist time been at TIQQE?

A mix of working concentrated from home, socializing and working at the office, joining the first lesson in an internal leadership programme.
So as they say in the movie industry: “In medias res” – dropped into the center of things.

What are you looking forward to in the nearest future?

I am really excited about growing the AI-initiative with more customers and projects and finding interesting problems to solve in this space.

What do you know about TIQQE now?

I think basically what I thought I knew has been confirmed, so I am happy about that!

Welcome Torbjörn!

What did you know about TIQQE before you started?

I came in contact with TIQQE in 2018 on one of their re:Invent event and learned that they focus on serverless and AWS. I also got the impression that they cared about their customers and employees and that they are a company that wants to make a workplace modern and fun.

Josefin Karlsson just joined TIQQE

We are happy to welcome Josefin Karlsson to our growing family as fullstack developer. We asked Josefin a couple of questions about her first impressions of TIQQE.

My name is Josefin and I just finished my bachelor in Computer Science in June. Soon 25 years old and I love dogs, especially puppies. I also like to read, learn new things and challenge myself. Started working at TIQQE in July and I am really exited to start my cloud-journey with this amazing company.

What did you know about TIQQE before you started?

I knew from the beginning that TIQQE works with serverless and AWS. I was aware that they care about their customers and employees.

Why did you want to join TIQQE?

Sofia was my mentor during my second year at university, when I got closer to my graduation we decided to meet up and talk about TIQQE. After meeting the employees and hearing about the company I knew I wanted to be a part of it. I think the concept of cloud is really interesting and you could also tell by looking at the employees, that they enjoyed working at TIQQE.

What was your first impression of TIQQE the first week?

Since I just finished my bachelor in computer science, I was very excited but also a bit scared to start since I do not have any experience within this industry. My worries turned out to be unnecessary, the people at TIQQE made me feel welcome from the start and they really encourage me to learn and ask as many questions as I possibly can and need.

What is your role at TIQQE?

I will be working as a fullstack developer.

How has your first time been at TIQQE?

I have had a great experience these first weeks, it is interesting to learn more about AWS and talk with all these talented people at TIQQE.

What are you looking forward to in the nearest future?

First of all I look forward to learning more about AWS, how TIQQE works as a company with customers and the whole development process. I am also excited to meet more of the employees, since I started during summer vacation the office was quite empty.

What do you know about TIQQE now?

The care for employees and customers are not just words or slogans, this is a company that truly cares and stands for their values every single day. You are welcome just the way you are and no questions are stupid.  TIQQE is also a company with a lot of knowledge and competence, not only in AWS but the entire business.

Thanks for sharing Josefin!
